What do I cry for? celebrates crying as one’s bodily need. The structure of the piece first guides one through the social and theatrical elements that make the performer cry. Until the performer starts to rage against the structures and cries against the logic of social and theatrical agreements.

Crying is observed as fragility as well as monstrosity; as something that isolates as well as connects diverse people; crying is exposed as the means to express one’s honesty as well as one’s ability to manipulate the other. The audience is invited to empathize, enjoy or question the performer’s crying as well as observe theater as a social agreement.

Reviews

I have to admit that in terms of energy, Grėtė Šmitaitė had the most impact on me. She gave me such a mental and physical kick, something to carry with me, something to go on the road with. She didn't leave me confused and disappointed but led me into a kind of meditation on the world, a vibrating, mournful passage: a state of being frenzy, sometimes between the smiling, but inside, on the surface.

What do I cry for? creates a public space where it’s okay to cry, loudly and proudly, illustrating the strength of vulnerability.
